FLPA HAITI Public Health and Social Justice in Haiti
This 18-day course, currently under review to become a Magis Core Intersections course, employs a justice approach to understanding the historical global inequalities and structural violence at the root of poverty and suffering in Haiti, while gaining a deeper appreciation for the cultural values, community-based public health efforts, and local development projects shaping Haitian life today. Students and faculty will meet for three days on campus for pre-departure classroom work, spend ten full days in Haiti, and meet again for three days of post-immersion, on-campus classroom work and reflection. This FLPA course is also paired with a 1-credit hour on-campus service-learning “Action Lab,” to be taken in the following Fall semester, where students will engage in post-trip action efforts in ongoing collaboration with community partners in Haiti.
