Students in this class will live in the mountains of West Virginia and work with a community that serves those of the area in various forms of outreach. This outreach includes home repair, tutoring children, working with the elderly and/or home-bound, gathering and cooking for community night, advocacy work…and coming to know the particular strengths and perspectives of those who deal with poverty day to day. Through visits to various community organizations, students will also gain insight into the systemic causes of the poverty here. We will also work with and learn about sustainability methods as they are implemented by the community. (We have also had the opportunity to go whitewater rafting on past trips and hope to do the same this year!)
